Isuzu is a Japanese manufacturer of diesel engines and commercial vehicles. It was founded by Yoshisuke Aikawa in Tokyo, Japan. The story of Isuzu begins more than 90 years ago. The brand started its journey as a joint collaboration between Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Tokyo Gas and Electric Industrial Company in 1916. The success of this collaboration and the desire to create a vehicle was realized in 1918 with the production of the first truck. Afterward, the company acquired a license to manufacture the British Wolseley automobiles exclusively for East Asia. The first automobile was created in 1922. After years of research and improvement in the production process, the goal of the company was to manufacture a bus. Their model was the first of a kind in Japan, equipped with air brakes. Several years later, Tokyo Jidosha Kogyo Company was formed, which indicated what will be the focus of the company in the future – the production of commercial vehicles and diesel engines. In the 40’s, the company was named ISUZU, after a river. Followed several unsuccessful collaborations with Nissan, Subaru and Mitsubishi, and in the 70’s a collaboration between Isuzu and General Motors began, which proved to be a complete score for this Japanese brand. The American Isuzu Motors Inc was founded in 1983 and the success of Isuzu increased and resulted in making and selling vehicles under the brand name on the American market. Today, Isuzu is part of General Motors and is widely recognized by the quality and durability of the vehicles it produce and affordable price tags.
