Citibank or Citibank of New York was founded in 1812 by few New York merchants. The first head of the bank was Samuel Osgood, United States Postmaster general. After some time, the management and ownership of the bank was taken by Moses Taylor (John Jacob Astor protege, one of the business world leaders in the 19th century). During Moses Taylor dominance, Citibank was working as a finance center for his own business empire. In 1863, Citibank joined the United States national new banking system and became The National Citibank of New York. In 1868, Citibank was considered as one of the biggest banks in the U.S. and in 1897, it became the 1st major United States bank able to establish a department overseas. Over the years, the bank was led by several presidents, had its ups and downs, but still remained to this day, one of the biggest and most successful banks in the United States and world.
