Bvlgari is one of the most famous brands when it comes to watches and jewelry. The brand was founded in Rome, Italy by Sotirios Voulgaris (1857–1932, born in Greece). The company name comes from the surname of the founder and the letter “V” is taken from the Latin, which is read as “U”, thus the name is pronounced as “Bulgari”. Sotirios learned to work with jewelry in Greece and left his country in 1877 and moved first to Corfu. He later moved to Nepal, before setteling in Rome in 1881. Sotirios started his own company in 1884 “Bvlgari”, the first shop selling jewelry manufacturing in the Via Sistina in Rome. Decorations were made mainly of silver, because at that time it was considered as more refined and aristocratic material. In 1905, with the help of his two sons, Sotirios moved his store in Via dei Condotti. His success and impeccable designs soon became known around the world and Sotirios expanded his business by opening stores outside Italy. First stores were opened in 1970 in New York, Paris, Geneva and Monte Carlo. Currently, the company has over 300 stores worldwide. The initial success of the brand is based on its magnificent jewelry, but later expanded to other departments and today Bvlgari offers wide array of watches, accessories, handbags and perfumes.

Interesting Facts & Events

* The commercial which shows the nude actress Julianne Moore covered up by lion cubs, handbags and jewelry was rejected from being posted on billboards in Venice, Italy. According to Mayor Giorgio Orsoni, the image was too racy and inappropriate for St. Mark’s Square.
