Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, born on August 19th, 1883 in France, is the one who revolutionized woman’s fashion by building an empire called Chanel. Even though she had a troubled childhood and grew up in an orphanage where she learned to sew, Coco Chanel change the fashion forever with her innovative and daring designs. She was the only fashion designer to top Time Magazine’s ‘100 Most Important People of The Century’ list. In 1910, she started paving her path towards success when she opened her first hat shop. However, it wasn’t until her vacation in Deauville, where she redesigned her lover’s jersey shirt that changed the world of fashion. At the time, women were obliged to wear corsets and had little freedom to experience with fashion. Coco Chanel changed that. She was the first to introduce collared shirts with ties, hats, stripped sailor shirts, quilted purse, two-tone pumps, iconic suits and the legendary little black dress which shifted the fashion in totally new direction. Even today, little black dress is the first thing majority of women have in their closets. She was also the first designer to lend her name to a fragrance and took the fashion world to the new level. Her first fragrance,Chanel Nº5, was launched in 1921 and is since the best selling perfume in the market (every 30 seconds one sells in the world). * In 1957, when a journalist asked Marilyn Monroe “What do you wear to bed?”, her answer “Just a few drops of Chanel Nº5” launched this fragrance to the top.
* Ernest Beaux was the one who created Chanel No5. He created 9 perfumes and marked the bottles with numbers from 1 to 5 and 20 to 24. Coco Chanel chose bottle number 5 because she believed that number 5 is her lucky number. The perfume was presented on the fifth day of the fifth month of the year, on May 5th, 1921.
