About
Dreams do come true. That was the case with Karl Toosbuy who had this dream of having his very own shoe factory and running his own business. He started to dream big quite young and in fact, he was trained to become a shoemaker. He became so good that in his early 30s he was already managing a shoe factory in Copenhagen. Together with his mate Birtie, they were convinced that they could find a reliable workforce and open their own business. So, it was in 1962 when they published an advertisement in Jyllands-Posten with the title “Who wants us?”. This was the moment when local businessmen and farmers from Bredebro (located 250km from Copenhagen) responded to the advertisement. Shortly after this, on the 1st of April 1963, Karl and Birtie opened their first shoe company. The company was established for the amount of 158 000 Danish Kroner and started with a small number of workers. But by the end of the year, the number of workers rose up to 74. This was a sign that the company was designed to become one of the most successful ones in the world.
