About

Hugo Boss was a German fashion designer born in Metzingen who decided to start his own company in 1924 after gaining some experience at his parents’ local lingerie shop. But difficult economic state of the country at the time caused early bankruptcy. In 1931 creditors allowed Hugo Boss to keep six of his sewing machines to start over. Over that same year he gained economic help becoming a member of the National Socialist party and a member of the Schutzstaffel from whom he got lots of angel investments. During the period between from 1936 and 1941 Hugo Boss became a member of other prominent German associations . Moreover, the company was the original manufacturer for uniforms of many German institutions including the National Socialist Party and several of the army departments. As demands started rising, the need of labor was controversially fulfilled with war prisoners and forced work force, an act which is raising lots of debate until today. Menages of the company were pronounced admirers of Adolf Hitler and his work. In 1946 because of his support of the SS and NS party he was marked as a activist of National socialism and was punished with no-voting and his license to run a business was taken. Hugo Boss dyed 2 years after his conviction but his business continued to grow and advance.

In 1953 the first men’ suits were produced and became an instant hit among stars. After 32 years in 1985 the company was offered on the stock market and eventually purchased by the Marzotto Group – an Italian fashion group owned by the eponymous Italian family. After trials on the Nazi connection case the company was fined in 1999 with forced donations to a special fund for help of World War 2 victims. Today Hugo Boss is a synonym for menswear and suits and continues to improve quality of its products.
