Jean Paul Gaultier is a french designer considered to be one of the most controversial designers in the fashion world. Born on April 24, 1952 in Paris, France, Jean began at the age of 17 to go to fashion ateliers and show his sketches with models. In 1970, Pierre Cardin was so impressed by his talent that he hired him as an assistant. In the next 6 years, Jean Paul Gaultier gained enough experience at Jean Patou and Jacques Esterel to launch his first solo collection in 1976. The collection was as shocking as it was innovative that not one of the fashion citics or fans noticed that Jean Paul Gaultier had no specialized fashion education. On the contrary, everyone recognized and embraced his undeniable talent. The fashion collections of Jean Paul Gaultier are a mix of street fashion and pop culture. He was the first designer who used and still uses “real people” (young and old, thin and fat, beautiful and ugly) to present his fashion collections. This did not only bring additional critisism but also popularity and a position of a creative director for Hermes. Today, Jean Paul Gaultier continues to impress the world with his creations.
