About
Among popular wine brands in Australia, Penfolds is right there on the very top, producing tasty and high quality wine since 1844. The company was established by Christopher Rawson Penfold, an English physician who was part of Australia’s British colonization at the time. His wife Mary Penfold was also a co-founder and has helped him in preserving one of the oldest wineries in Australia. After arriving in Australia, Christopher and Mary Penfold acquired a 500 acre land where they plant french grape wine cuttings brought from England. Christopher’s admiration of how wine can have a positive effect on the human body has led him to conduct series of researches for producing the best wine tonic. The purpose – treatment of anemia. While her husband was responsible for perfecting the distillation process and finding new tastes, Mary was managing the company in a way no one expected. After Christopher’s death in 1870, Mary refused to sell the company after her son suggested that she should retire. Instead, the company grew even bigger and by 1903 was the largest winery in the region. During 1900-1976 the company had a steady growth and was still in the ownership of the Penfold family – son-in-law Hyland and daughter Georgina. The same year Penfolds went public but controlling interest remained in the hands of Hyland and Georgina Penfold. Today this company is ownership of Treasury Wine Estates (Fosters Group had previous ownership of Penfolds). With a release of a limited edition of 2004 Block 42 in June 2012, which became the most expensive wine sold, Penfolds’ name got heard around the world.
Products
White and red wines – Penfolds has increased its wine catalog with production from several different grape groups and today it offers around 50 different wine brands all developed under the strict and unique conditions. The most popular wine, Grange, is the oldest in the product line and enjoys a hundred years old profile. These red and white wines are distributed world wide and are divided in several categories according to price and grape sort. The Icon and Luxury range includes high quality and expensive wines that best describe the dedicated work Penfolds have conducted over its years of existence.
Fortified wines – Penfolds also offers fortified wines that are basically different sorts of wines mixed with brandy and other liquors. Tawny is the name of this sub-brand that has several editions which differ on richness, complexity and concentration. Some of these fine bottles of wines are matured for 15 years and sometimes even longer in order to achieve the perfect taste.
Glassware – Apart from its primary market, Penfolds also sells glassware to enhance the whole experience of wine drinking. Most of these glassware products are different in shape and size according to the need of customers and their personal taste. Although it is not very profitable market, selling glassware improves the image of Penfolds company, which tries to show customers that they don’t just sell wine, but the whole philosophy of consuming wines.
