The story of Schots began in 1978 when Heather and Neville opened a small shop and residence under the name ‘The Antique Garden’ in Moonee Ponds. They started the business selling potted plants and second – hand furniture pieces that were sourced locally. But they didn’t just sell the furniture in the form the got it. Instead, they would restore it in their makeshift shop and add to it a breath of life and a dash of new colour.

This business of theirs was accepted really well by people, so they’ve decided to move into a larger space in Chapel Street, South Yarra. They spent the next 15 years growing and eventually, the shop started selling reproduction and original pieces as well. Schots continued to grow and opened three stores in Surrey Hills, Ascot Vale and South Yarra, and in 1994 they were united under one roof in an old factory in Clifton Hill. However, this wasn’t enough since the store evolved even more, so in 2012, they opened a new family-owned store outside of Melbourne, in Geelong.

The vision of this store has always been to unearth the uncommon and it still is. The owners of Schots love to be inspired and they travel around the world in order to find the best in craftsmanship, design and materials. Pieces with unique personality have always been something you can find in this store, whether they’re ready-made or not. The skilled artisans of this store are always there and ready to produce products that can appeal to the customers’ individual creativity.

Interesting Facts & Events

Neville and Heather are still the head of the business, however, their children Fiona, Megan and Elliot are also a part of it.
Nowadays, Schots works alongside an extended family that counts more than 70 staff including managers, marketers, international buyers, importers, retail and warehouse staff.
The space they’ve moved in in 1994 was a three-storey red-brick factory that they turned into their home.
Schots has a monthly photo competition in which everyone can take part. You just need to follow their Instagram account, upload a photo with at least one of your Schots products, mention them in the post and run for a $150 voucher.
