Shiseido is a symbol for high quality hair and cosmetic products. Shiseido was the first Japanese Western-style pharmacy founded in 1872. At the time, people in the East were treating and healing themselves exclusively with herbs. The founder of Shiseido, Arinobu Fukuhara who at the time was chief pharmacist in a military hospital, was dissatisfied with drugs available on the market and decided to develop a system which will distinguish the medical from the outpatient medical practices in Japan. So, at just 23 years old, he became the owner of Shiseido. The origin of the name Shiseido comes from the classic Chinese text “I Ching” (“Book of Changes”) and means “Praise the virtues of the great Land that nurtures new life and brings new values.” The model of thinking which expresses the name of the company is “Eastern style, Western learning” and includes determination of creating new culture and new business based on Western medicine and name inspired by Eastern philosophy. In 1888, Shiseido presented the first Japanese toothpaste and in 1897, the brand launched the first face lotion “Eudermine”. Since, every new product was a success.

Interesting Facts

* The Shiseido logo is made of camellias and was created in 1915. When Shiseido was mainly in the pharmaceutical business, their logo was a brave hawk, but after the company started to focus on cosmetics, the logo was changed since at the time, the best-selling product was their hair oil Koyu Hanatsubaki (Hanatsubaki in Japanese means camellia).

* In 1923, Shiseido began opening a string of franchised retail outlets.

* In 1927, the company was incorporated as Shiseido Company, Limited and is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

* In 1957, brand’s international expansion began.

* In 1981 Shiseido begins marketing cosmetics in China.

* The founder Arinobu Fukuhara was born on the 10^th of May, 1848 and died on the 30^th of March, 1924.
