Telfast

About

The beginning of spring is a time for most people to get outside and enjoy the beautiful outdoors. Unfortunately, for allergy sufferers, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. For many people across Australia, spring signals the start of a season of sniffling, sneezing, congestion and itchy and watery eyes.

Upon the first sign of seasonal allergies, many Aussies will reach for Telfast tablets and sprays. Telfast is a brand name that refers to products containing a type of short-acting antihistamine that soothes allergy symptoms without making you sleepy. In Australia, Telfast is supplied by Sanofi Consumer Healthcare.

The Sanofi Australia branch was established in 1980, but the original company has a history dating back to more than a hundred years. Today, Sanofi Australia is the continent’s leading supplier of vaccines, diabetic treatments and medications like allergy tablets. Sanofi’s headquarters are based in Sydney, but the company also has offices, laboratories and a manufacturing plant in Brisbane, as well as offices in some of the bigger cities in Australia.

As a brand name of Sanofi, Telfast includes several types of hayfever, year-round allergy, and hive relief medicines in a variety of strengths. Most Telfast medication contains the active ingredient fexofenadine hydrochloride. It helps reduce the symptoms of allergies by blocking the release of histamine (a chemical the body releases when exposed to certain allergens).

What sets Telfast products apart from other antihistamines is that it has a non-sedating effect. In other words, it’s not found to make people drowsy. Let’s learn more about the range of antihistamines and whether they’re right for your allergy problems.

Products

Telfast for Kids

If you have a young allergy sufferer in your family, rest assured he/she will get the needed relief with the help of the Telfast for kids oral antihistamine liquid. The active ingredient in the Telfast children range is fexofenadine hydrochloride, the same as in the adult version.

What sets it apart though is the reduced strength, namely 30mg per 5mL. It’s safe to use for kids as young as 6 months old for itchy skin and 2 years old for hayfever and perennial allergies. The recommended dose is 2.5mL, twice daily (a total of 5mL) when required.

It’s a fast-acting medicine, meaning that it works within 1 hour of application. As far as its efficacy duration goes, when taken as required, Telfast for kids oral liquid can reduce symptoms for up to 24 hours.

However, if your child has an allergy to fexofenadine or any of the other ingredients in the liquid, the medications must not be given. Also, never use Telfast oral liquid to treat a child younger than 2 for allergic rhinitis as there is currently no information to recommend it. For children older than 12, use one of the other Telfast products.

Fast 24HR Relief – 120/180mg

As far as adults go, you get to choose between Telfast 120 and 180 mg tablets, depending on the severity of your symptoms. Both the 120 and 180 mg tablets are available in blisters with 10, 30, 50 or 60 tablets and can be bought in local as well as online pharmacies. Some pharmacies also carry Telfast 180 mg in packs of 70 tablets.

The tablets can be used for a variety of hayfever and urticaria symptoms such as sneezing, congestion, itchy and watery eyes, sore throat or nose, hives and swelling.

Allergy Duo Kit

This kit contains a combination of Telfast 180mg and Telenasal – Telfast nasal spray. It is used for both the prevention and treatment of hayfever allergy. Just like the kids oral liquid, it has a fast-acting effect. This Telfast medicine kit can be used for preventing and relieving nasal congestion, sneezing, and runny and itchy nose. It is safe to use for up to 6 months continuously.

The usual recommended dose for adults and children older than 12 is 1 tablet a day of Telfast 180mg and two sprays in each nostril once a day. For the spray to work, it may be necessary to wait 1-2 days. If you still don’t experience any effects, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Once the symptoms are diminished using the spray, reduce the dose to one spritz in each nostril.

Do not overstep the amount of medication recommended and do not use the tablets if the blister seal is damaged. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your healthcare provider whether it’s safe to use the Allergy Duo Kit.

Video Commercials and Ads

While Telfast is considered a household name in Australia, Sanofi still advertises its antihistamine products with creative video commercials and ads.
