Story of Van Cleef & Arpels very much resembles a fairytale. It all began in 1896 after a beautiful wedding of Estelle Arpels and Alfred Van Cleef. Alfred Van Cleef was a handsome young man, son of a talented Dutch diamond cutter, who moved from Amsterdam to Paris. Since an early age, Alfred showed big interest in diamonds; he used to draw in his notebook a river of diamonds while attending Paris High School. Estelle was a very elegant woman, daughter of Alfred’s cousin, Leon, also a diamond cutter. In 1898, soon after the wedding to Estelle, Alfred joined her brothers Charles, Julian and Luis, who were experts in diamond business and Gemology, and they soon opened a store in Paris. Because of Alfred’s talent and strong family spirit, they soon became founders of the most sought-after brand in the market of jewelry. Other jewelry salons were opened in Nice (1910), New York (1939), Palm Beach (1940), Cannes (1921) and Monte Carlo in 1935. The Van Cleef & Arpels contribution to the history of jewelry design is enormous.
