The renowned and most famous lingerie brand, Victoria’s Secret, was founded in 1977 in San Francisco by Roy Raymond. As he once said, he felt embarrassed when shopped for his wife’s lingerie and thus came up with the idea of comfortable lingerie shopping for both men and women. He borrowed $80,000 and opened his first shop in Stanford Shopping center in Palo Alto, California. The company grossed $500,000 in the first year alone and soon expanded by opening four new stores. Raymond introduced mail-order catalog to increase sales which by 1982 accounted for 55% of total company’s annual sales. However, Raymond’s initial focus on male customers no longer had its impact and sales decreased significantly bringing the company to a verge of bankruptcy. Raymond was forced to put company on the market for sale and was soon acquired by the founder of The Limited brand, Leslie Wexner for $ 4 million. Leslie focused on female customers; their needs and desires; likes and dislikes and transformed Victoria’s Secret into a world famous and most sought-after lingerie brand. New products were vibrant, stylish, colorful, sultry yet tasteful and attracted the targeted audience and just the right amount of attention that brought Victoria’s Secret to the very top. In addition, company holds fashion show once a year which further contributes to this brand’s popularity. Today, Victoria’s Secret has 1,000 store across the United States which, together with catalog orders contribute to $6.12 billion in annual sales (official number for 2012).
