Wrangler is one of the most iconic manufacturers of denim jeans, without a doubt. Although it officially received the name Wrangler in 1943, the company has a much longer history. It all started way back in 1897 when C.C. Hudson, a 20-year-old American man, decided to seek his fortune in the then-emerging textile industry. He started by finding a simple job of sewing buttons on overalls, which earned him only 25 cents a day. When his workplace closed in 1904, Hudson, his brother and a few others bought some of the sewing machines and opened up the Hudson Overall Company.
The Hudson Overall Company gained great success, and in 1919 the business built its first factory in Greensboro and changed its name to the Blue Bell Overall Company. After almost two of successful work, Blue Bell set a new standard in the work-wear industry by launching their Superior Big Ben Overalls. These overalls were made of 100% sanforized fabric, which reduced shrinkage after washing to less than 1%.
As the demand grew even more after the Superior Big Ben Overalls, in 1943 Blue Bell acquired Casey Jones Company which produced work-clothing. By doing so, Blue Bell also acquired the rights to a rarely used brand name of Casey Jones – Wrangler. So, when Blue Bell started to develop a special jeans line for cowboys, the workers voted to give the new line a brand name. And the winning choice was Wrangler which soon became synonymous with the hard-working and rugged cowboy.
The Wrangler jeans were the first type of pants to include features designed particularly for cowboys. They came with felled inseams and outseams for protection against rips when getting up and down from the saddle, rear pockets strategically positioned to feel comfortable when in the saddle, “no scratch” pocket reinforcement, a convenient zipper fly and the use of strong tack in the crotch instead of a metal rivet. The line was officially launched in 1947 with a promotional campaign that featured Bill, Linderman, Freckles Brown, Jim Shoulders and other rodeo legends.
But how did Wrangler jeans become such a popular name in mainstream fashion? Well, there wasn’t any turning point that made the company shift towards marketing their line to the average consumers that weren’t cowboys. It sort of happened gradually when people disappointed in the quality of mainstream jeans started to try out the more robust Wranglers. And by 1996, one of every five pairs of jeans sold in the US was a Wrangler.
Products
The largest part of Wrangler’s range is dedicated to their line of jeans, obviously. But in 2003 Wrangler added two new lines to their family: Riggs Workwear by Wrangler which produces premium work clothes and Wrangler ProGear which is a line of hunting apparel. Additionally, the company also produces everyday clothing items and accessories like polo shirts, belts and all with a distinctive Country-Western vibe.
Today, Wrangler jeans are seen as more than just Western-style and work-wear staples. Wrangler jeans have become a worldwide icon. The signature “W” embroidered on the back pockets of the jeans is one of the most recognisable symbols in fashion. Today, the people that buy Wrangler jeans are those that recognise good design and want a pant that is hard-wearing and comfortable at the same time.
So, where can you buy Wrangler jeans in Australia? Wrangler jeans and the entire Wrangler range can be found at Western apparel retail stores, some sporting goods stores and select department stores. You can also buy Wrangler accessories and other clothing items at most of the stores selling the famous jeans.
Focus on Sustainability
The fact that they produce products that can last for a lot more than the average jeans, means that shopping from Wrangler is already a sustainable choice. But the company doesn’t stop there. They’ve pledged to use 100% renewable energy for powering all of their owned and operated facilities by 2025. They’ve also managed to save 5.5. billion litres of water by 2020. Additionally, Wrangler has formed a coalition of academic and nonprofit partners to help cotton growers adopt the best practices for soil health without the use of fertilisers, pesticides and excessive amounts of water. Their aim is for their products to be made of 100% sustainable cotton by 2025.
Video Commercials & Ads
Even though Wrangler has become a household name and is worn by everyone from teenagers to office workers, the company still likes to advertise their products by linking them to cowboys and work-wear. Their newest fall-winter 2019 line is described by the brand with the following words: “There are jeans brands. And then there’s Wrangler. Worn by cowboys, rebels, rock stars. Worn by you. We’re 70 years young and counting. Dependable. Different. Breaking conventions, and looking great doing it. A truly iconic American brand. And behind every shirt, every w-embroidered denim covered butt, our iconic story continues to unfold.”
