Zahnradfabrik Friedrichshafen, or shortly known as ZF, is a German public company founded in 1915 by Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin. The German “Zahnradfabrik” stands for gear factory. ZF was founded primary for making precision cog wheels and gears for the Zeppelin airships. In 1918, the company strted the production of transmissions for automobiles. The brand managed to survive the difficult war years in Germany and after the WWII, the company began to grow and soon became Europe’s largest manufacturer of transmissions, steering and drives. One of the main reasons for the successful development of the company was the process of diversification. In 1958, the company started manufacturing transmissions for the auto and truck industry and also transmissions for helicopters and began developing machine tools. Several years later, in 1960, ZF launched its first products on the market – axles for trucks and tractors. Fully synchronized transmission for mid-sized vehicles was introduced in 1961.

Over the next several years the brand started manufacturing motor brakes for trucks, drives for vehicles used in agriculture, transmission for boats, electrical clutches, oil pumps, steering and axles for machines used in the agriculture and construction, and cog wheels of all kinds. In 1992, the company changed its name to ZF Friedrichshafen AG. Today, this is one of the largest vendors in the global auto industry and the largest independent manufacturer of transmissions and chassis products and technology. Headquartered in Friedrichshafen, Germany, the company keeps a global presence with 25 production plants and 26 service and sales subsidiaries across the world. Their innovative and successful products are result of the consistent technological development. The decentralized structure allows a high degree of market and customer proximity.
